NARA UNIVERSITY
OF EDUCATION
The UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet)

In July 2007, our university became the first UNESCO Associated School of Japanese Universities. UNESCO Associated Schools aim to promote UNESCO values, facilitate cultural exchange networks among schools, teachers and individual students, share information, and develop new educational methods and systems which will enable young people to deal with important issues on a global level. At the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO, UNESCO Associated Schools are positioned as hubs for promoting ESD, and at our university, we are working to disseminate and promote ESD by advocating "development of teachers who can contribute to creation of a sustainable society" in the three pillars of our university. One element of this is "raising the level of teacher development with ESD at the core," a project for addressing contemporary educational issues. We are developing and deploying a practice-oriented ESD-related teacher training program in which acquisition of credits in ESD-related subjects is combined with ESD exercises and practice, and ESD classes are created in collaboration with currently working teaching professionals.

ESD Teacher Program

SDGs stands for Sustainable Development Goals, and measures are being taken around the world to address various global issues such as environmental problems, poverty, conflict, and economic disparity. The Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is an education program that aims to develop people who can see such issues as their own and participate in solving them. Nara University of Education has organized the Kinki ESD Consortium to promote ESD in the fields of school education and social education, mainly in the Kinki region, and the core of its efforts is the ESD Teacher Program. The core of the program is the ESD Teacher Program, in which students and in-service teachers work together to learn about ESD and receive an ESD Teacher Certificate from the president of the university after fulfilling certain requirements. In addition to taking ESD-related courses, the ESD Teacher Program offers a variety of other programs, including volunteer participation in school and community-based ESD initiatives (ESD practice), ESD seminars in which students participate in lectures and workshops on the SDGs and ESD outside of the classroom, and ESD seminars in which students learn collaboratively with in-service teachers. In addition to classes, there are ESD seminars where students can participate in lectures and workshops on SDGs and ESD, and ESD seminars where students can learn collaboratively with in-service teachers.

SST(Super Science Teacher)Program

The Nara University of Education focuses on training teachers who are strong in science and mathematics (arithmetic). The Center for Science and Mathematics Education and Research offers the SST (Super Science Teacher) Training Program. Two types of courses are offered: the SST course for those who plan to obtain teaching licenses in mathematics and science, and the SST basic course for those who plan to obtain teaching licenses in other fields of study in elementary schools, so students can participate regardless of their specialization. We aim to train teachers who can play an active role as saviors of science and mathematics education by exposing them to the results of advanced science, small-group seminars to improve their logical and abstract thinking skills, development of practical teaching materials and curricula, and practical activities at educational sites.

School Support

The Nara University of Education offers the "School Support Training and Certification System," an experiential learning support program separate from the educational training, so that students who aspire to become teachers can gain experience in the field from an earlier stage and for a longer period of time. In cooperation with each board of education, we send students to school sites as "school supporters (school activity support volunteers)" and hold "school supporter training sessions", and certify those who complete the sessions as "school supporter level 2" or "school supporter level 1". School Supporter Level 2" and "School Supporter Level 1". In addition, we offer "School Field Exercise I" and "School Field Exercise II" for those who have obtained "School Supporter Level 2" (including prospective students). In these courses, students engage in school support activities and deepen their understanding of educational activities and issues in schools through their experiences in that field.
